Propinquity Software was developed in 1997 by David Clarkson, M.D. It is a documentation program designed for physicians by a physician.

Frustrated by disorganized charting systems, Dr. Clarkson began developing a systematic approach to display a longitudinal summary database. It eliminated charting redundancy by memorializing recurring chart components. He developed a program that gives him a superb diagnostic and clinical management tool for his own oncology practice. This program eliminates duplicative dictation and charting. It saves time by highlighting essential clinical information, reducing the need to navigate through large charts.

Fortunately, these innovations have come together at a time when regulatory agencies are insisting on greater documentation of level III and IV encounters. Having used Propinquity Software in his practice for two years, Dr. Clarkson was approached by a JCAH reviewer who chanced upon one of his charts. She remarked that it was the best H & P she had ever seen. Little did she know that generation of the document took only a couple of minutes because the database had already been memorialized.

Although the software program helps with documentation, Dr. Clarkson's greatest satisfaction is the sense of certainty he feels upon entering the examination room. After a quick review of the patient’s longitudinal medical history, he can care for his patient with a thorough familiarity of the medical history.

David Clarkson earned his medical degree in 1969 from the University of Florida College of Medicine. Following residencies at the University of Pittsburgh and Washington University (Barnes Hospital), Dr. Clarkson earned board certification in internal medicine (1972), hematology (1974), and medical oncology (1989).

In addition to publishing numerous articles on clinical topics, Dr. Clarkson has spoken extensively on medical informatics and information management. He is in private practice in Mobile, Alabama.
